David Dawson was the medical advisor on the UK’s largest study into OSA in HGV drivers. The lead investigator was Melanie Marshall and the project was funded by Profile Respiratory Systems. This company was taken over by Respironics and they have subsequently been taken over by Philips. The headline outcomes from this study are: 20% of UK HGV drivers have moderate to severe OSA (as classified by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) Drivers with untreated OSA have 3 times more accidents (both major and minor), and 3 days more sick leave per year. The Study was carried out on UK HGV drivers but it is important to point out that other drivers are also affected as are workers in other occupations where vigilance is important.
